Our brief was to brighten up a dark, unloved corner of the school. Linking with the topic of Natural Wonders we worked with 60 Year 5 children to design and make the coral reef over half a term using recycled materials (old clothes, gloves, socks, wool, twigs, pipe cleaners, paper, cardboard tubes and other found objects). The children worked with us in small groups of six and this gave them time to learn and develop new skills including:
- control of tools especially sewing needles and scissors
- being able to use a range of materials to make 3D models
- making decisions about the visual and tactile quality of the materials available
- working as a team to produce one large statement artwork
The end result was a fantastic and magical installation complete with fairy lights and treasure chest, which the Year 5 children are very proud of and which has transformed a dark corner into a sea of colour and imagination.
